Kaysy’s Story

I was 7 when I had to take on responsibilities that were not normal. Dad was not around, mum was an alcoholic and often out at the pub so I had to make sure my little brother who had cystic fibrosis, ate and took his medication. When I was 13 Mum came home drunk one night and she told me to get out of her life

I was referred to Youth Insearch by my school councillor. Everyone accepted me, I loved it. I received so much love and support that I was motivated to do something about it. I was over the moon to be accepted into Leaders Training where I could finally do something for kids who were going through similar situations.

I now share an apartment with my boy friend, I work almost full time and am studying "Certificate 4" in Community Services. I aim to attend Charles Sturt University to study a Bachelor in Primary Teaching, which has been my dream since the age of seven.

Because of Youth Insearch I have found the courage and confidence to be who I want to be. I don’t drink or smoke, this is my own choice, sometimes my friends don’t understand but I am proud that I can be a role model to other young people.
